Koalix Nursery
The venue

Thirty years of seedlings, then this

A shed that raised tube stock for the coast, bought as it stood, with the benches and the lighting rig left exactly where they were.

Since 2023

What we kept and what we scrapped

Kept: the trusses, the concrete, the timber benches, the trays, the watering cans on the wall and the whole overhead lighting rig.

Scrapped: the roller shutters, the office partition and eleven cubic metres of potting mix nobody wanted.

Added: a kitchen along the northern wall, a bar built on the old potting bench, and a dimmer that turned a growing rig into a mood.

The nursery frontage and signage on Clarence Street

Six staff

Kitchen and floor together, three of them here since week one.

Sixty seats

Dining and cards together, and we stop there.

Eight benches

Resurfaced potting benches, now card tables.

About the building

Four things people ask about the shed

Was this really a nursery?
It was. Tube stock for coastal plantings, mostly eucalypts, until 2021.
Are the lights the original ones?
The rig is. The globes are not, for reasons of both cost and safety.
Why keep the watering cans?
Because prising thirty of them off a wall is work, and they look better than art.
Is it hot under the tin?
In February, yes. That is what the fans and the midday opening are for.
